The Forum
The Law and the Media, Shipbuilding on the Clyde
– and Lots of Questions
The syllabus for our new session of Netherlee Forum meetings has now been finalised and we do hope that there will be something of interest for all tastes. We have attempted to choose subject matters which are topical and of local interest and we hope to stimulate some lively debate. As before, we will meet in the lesser sanctuary at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month starting in October and continuing through to April this year, as Easter is later. Do please put the dates in your diary and come along and join us for some friendship and lively discussion.
We start off the session on 18th October with our very own David McKie who will lead a discussion entitled “The Law and the Media - can the courts protect the public against intrusion?” David is an elder in Netherlee Kirk, and a partner in Levy and McRae Solicitors, a firm which represents the Daily Record and the Herald newspaper titles together with STV. David also lectures in Media Law at the University of Glasgow.
Our guest speaker at the November Forum is Ian Johnston, designer and author. Ian is the former Depute Director of Digital Design Studios, a department of the Glasgow School of Art and has worked closely with Historic Scotland. Ian will be speaking on the history of shipbuilding on the Clyde, an area in which he has considerable expertise and he has written a number of books on the subject, including The History of John Brown’s.
Our December meeting will once again be a “Question Time” with a selected panel of participants. This always proves to be an interesting and amusing night.
I hope this has whetted your appetite and that you can find something of interest in the programme. We are giving you plenty of notice so that you can make an early note in your diary. Our little management team of five namely Jamey Heit, Neil Illingworth, David Leslie, Catherine Nelson and Sheena Wurthmann have put together what we think is a varied programme and we look forward to welcoming newcomers to join with the regular Forum goers at our first meeting in October.
